A short while back I discovered that my Sargent 507's and 217's were very similar in design - same lever cap, same wood knob and same depth adjustment mechanism. So, I've been searching for 217 parts planes to fill in the gaps of the 507's where parts were either missing or broken. Problem is the 217's don't seem too plentiful and not very inexpensive.

Well, I just discovered that Sargent made block planes for Dunlap called the Dunlap Approved and are exactly the same as the Sargent 217 except for the cutter stamp. The Dunlaps are rather plentiful and sometimes very affordable to be used as parts planes.

The pictures below show a 507 (left) and a 217 (right), side by side. Both have a T-shaped casting reinforcing the raised boss for the lever cap screw. All of my 507's have this T-casting. I currently have two 217's - one has the T-casting and the other only has the raised boss. I also found this to be true of the Dunlap Approved planes I've been looking at on eBay.

One minor difference in the parts of all these planes is that some of the lever caps are nickel plated and others are japanned. Also, the bevel in the bed of the 507 is longer than the others besides having a mostly different, overall body casting.

You'll probably find a lot of house brands the same. Fulton for sure. Craftsman too.
